He is the son of Gilbert Shawn and Melba Rae, a television actress best known for her long-running role as Marge Bergman on the daytime soap opera Search for Tomorrow.
Shawn was educated at Trinity School in New York City and later graduated from Georgetown University, earning a degree in urban studies. In addition to his journalism career, he made a cameo appearance as a reporter in the 1990 film Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
