Sean Duffy Biography
Sean Duffy (born October 3, 1971) is an American politician, attorney, and former television personality who has served as the 20th United States Secretary of Transportation since January 2025. A member of the Republican Party, he previously represented Wisconsin’s 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011-2019.
He served as the district attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin, from 2002 to 2010. In 2025, he also served as acting administrator of NASA from July to December, until Jared Isaacman was confirmed in the role.
Duffy was born in Hayward, Wisconsin, where he gained recognition as a professional lumberjack. He competed in the Lumberjack World Championship for several years and won multiple speed-climbing titles. In 1997, he appeared on the MTV reality show The Real World: Boston.
He earned a degree in marketing from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and later graduated from William Mitchell College of Law in 1999. In 2002, he was appointed district attorney of Ashland County by Wisconsin governor Scott McCallum, serving in that role until 2010.
On November 18, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Duffy as U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Duffy was confirmed by the United States Senate on January 28, 2025, and sworn in the same day. Later, on July 9, 2025, Trump appointed him acting administrator of NASA until Isaacman’s Senate confirmation on December 18, 2025.
