Born on July 14, 1961, in Port Allen, Louisiana, Yma was the daughter of Katherine B. Clark (née Bouligney) and Wilson Lemon. She was christened and baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Port Allen, where her lifelong faith first took root.
Yma’s love for learning carried her through her education at Port Allen Elementary, Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School, McKinley Senior High School, Grambling State University, Southern University, and A&M College. Education, family, and faith remained the guiding pillars of her life.
She devoted her career to cosmetology, where she built lasting relationships with her clients, treating each with the same love as well care she gave her own family. Her salon chair was more than a place for beauty—it was a space of trust, laughter, and connection.
A devoted aunt and great-aunt, Yma poured her heart into her family. Yma is survived by her loving mother, Katherine Bouligney Clark; her brother, Don Lemon; her sister, Jacqueline Gray; her brother-in-law, Morris Grimes; and many cousins, extended relatives, and friends who treasured her presence. She was preceded in death by her sister, L’Tanya Leisa Grimes, her devoted stepfather, Horlis Clark, Sr., and her beloved grandmother, Mary Jackson Rivault Bouligney.
Gentle in spirit and creative in soul, Yma found joy in life’s simple but meaningful pleasures. She adored dogs, nurtured flowers, designed floral arrangements, crafted dolls, and lovingly made homemade candies to share with others. Her warmth, generosity, and quiet strength will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.
