Al Terzi Career

Al Terzi’s career spans over five decades of excellence in journalism and broadcasting. He began at WTIC-AM-FM-TV in June 1968 as a staff announcer when the station was owned by Travelers Insurance. After The Washington Post acquired the station in 1973 and renamed it WFSB, Terzi continued as a newscaster and talk show host. He was the original host of New England Journal, a one-hour daily talk show that debuted in 1974.

In June 1978, Terzi left WFSB to become a News Anchor and News Director at WPEC-TV12 (ABC) in West Palm Beach, Florida. Later that year, in October, he survived a near-fatal emergency landing while piloting a twin-engine Cessna in the Apalachicola National Forest. Despite suffering serious injuries and requiring months of surgeries, Terzi made a remarkable recovery and returned to broadcasting in May 1979.

Return to Connecticut

In April 1980, Terzi returned to Connecticut as the prime anchor at WTNH in New Haven, where he worked until January 1994. He then rejoined WFSB, where he shared in two Emmy Awards for his work—one for a series on the UConn Huskies basketball team and another for “Best Newscast.”

Legal Controversy

During his time at WTNH, his colleague Janet Peckinpaugh alleged sexual harassment. After being fired from WFSB in 1995, Peckinpaugh sued the station’s previous owners, citing allegations about Terzi. The case resulted in Peckinpaugh being awarded more than $8 million, though it was later settled out of court.

Later Career

In 2012, Terzi left WFSB after contract negotiations fell through. On July 8, 2012, he joined Fox affiliate WTIC-TV, anchoring the 5 p.m. newscast alongside Alison Morris when it launched in January 2013.

In March 2014, Terzi announced he would scale back his on-air duties, retiring from the anchor desk but continuing to host the political show The Real Story with Laurie Perez. He also expressed interest in teaching at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting and area colleges and universities.

Legacy

Throughout his career, Terzi has been a respected member of the Society of Professional Journalists, earning a reputation as a dedicated and accomplished journalist. Known for his resilience and commitment, he remains an iconic figure in Connecticut broadcasting.
