Connor McCarthy is an American celebrity son best known as the child of Kevin McCarthy, an American politician who served as the 55th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from January to October 2023.
A member of the Republican Party, Kevin McCarthy represented California in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 until his resignation in 2023, serving successively in the state’s 22nd, 23rd, and 20th congressional districts. He is a graduate of California State University, Bakersfield, and began his political career in the California State Assembly, where McCarthy served two terms before being elected to Congress in 2006.
During his congressional tenure, McCarthy held several leadership positions within the House Republican Conference, including chief deputy whip (2009–2011), majority whip (2011–2014), House majority leader (2014–2019), and House minority leader (2019–2023). After the Republican Party gained a narrow majority in the 2022 midterm elections, McCarthy became the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House. He was elected speaker in January 2023 following a historic 15 rounds of voting.
As speaker, McCarthy oversaw negotiations during the 2023 debt-ceiling crisis, which resulted in the passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. In September 2023, he relied on bipartisan support to pass a continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown.
Shortly afterward, he was removed from the speakership on October 3, 2023, following a motion to vacate introduced by Representative Matt Gaetz. McCarthy became the first speaker in U.S. history to be removed from office during a legislative session, as well resigned from Congress later that year.
