During high school, he enrolled in the Staunton Military Academy and developed a close friendship with the Goldwater family, including Barry Goldwater Jr., the son of Senator Barry Goldwater. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Colgate University and later transferred to the College of Wooster in Ohio, where he earned his B.A. in 1961.
Subsequently, he obtained a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1965.
