In September 2016, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Cooperman and Omega Advisors with insider trading. The specific allegations were related to “trading stocks, bonds, and call options of Atlas Pipeline Partners in July 2010 based on information obtained from an executive at the company.”
To resolve the charges, Cooperman’s firm reached a settlement with the SEC in May 2017, agreeing to a payment of $4.9 million without admitting any wrongdoing. As part of this settlement, both Cooperman and Omega Advisors consented to the oversight of a compliance monitor.
This monitor was granted access to their electronic communications and trading records, and the agreement included a commitment to submit monthly certifications confirming their non-engagement in insider trading until 2022.
