Growing up in a Spanish-speaking household, Quiñones didn’t learn English until he started school at the age of six. His early life experiences included joining a caravan of migrant farmworkers with his family when his father lost his job as a janitor. They traveled to Traverse City, Michigan, to harvest cherries and later followed the migrant route to pick tomatoes in Toledo, Ohio.
While attending Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, Quiñones was selected to participate in the Upward Bound program, a federal anti-poverty initiative that prepared inner-city high school students for college. He was also a member of the Sigma Beta-Zeta chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity during his undergraduate years.
Quiñones earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech communication from St. Mary’s University and later completed a Master of Arts degree at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. His career in journalism began as a radio news editor at KTRH in Houston, Texas, from 1975 to 1978. He then worked as an anchor and reporter for KPRC-TV and later reported for WBBM-TV in Chicago.
